‘What has gone amiss?’
Just like ‘Nothing’, she said,
Until she kicked the chair underneath her feet.
Or ‘Nothing’, he said when he wasn’t left with words
To explain why two plus two
Wasn’t his four anymore.
Just how people say ‘Nothing’ and ignore
A girl being mocked in broad daylight,
For her skirt being two inches above, not below.
Or they say ‘Nothing’ to silence the voices in their heads
Telling them, that the life they’re living,
Isn’t the life they chose.
‘Nothing’ is our excuse to turn blind,
Pull our blinds to cover the doors
Although we often forget
That unless we slam it shut, it’s never secure.
And ‘Nothing’ is how we slam it shut:
Our fear or indifference?
We will never know…
So we conveniently say ‘Nothing’
And barricade our conscience, voices that provoke
Sew up our eyes with threads of disregard
While our hearts are bursting with indignation –
Anger/ Hatred/ Pain –
We put up that same frayed mask over again
Go back to reiterate:
Into the void, where a thousand ‘Nothing’s
Have made the atmosphere so rancid
You vomit in horror
At the way you have turned cold.
But you know, how we were made to say ‘Nothing’
That, to ignore
And the world at large, was the only way
You could survive.
Because who has the time to put all ‘Nothing’s
Under a microscope?
Because if your ‘Nothing’s became Something
Heaven forbid! There would be chaos galore.
NO, you should just SHUT UP!
Swallow your opinions, emotions and turmoil
And lock them safely indoors,
Throw away the key into the deepest ocean
Hoping it is never found anymore.
So cram your head with multiple trivialities
That gnaws at the blank spaces which even had
A speck of the Something you were so scared,
To put up on show.
Even the straw couldn’t brave the tide anymore.
I was tired of pretending
That my ‘Nothing’s weren’t as important
As the stifled cries of a mind,
Thrashing its way ashore.
If only, you read in between my ‘Nothing’s
You would know,
How each time I said ‘Nothing’, I died a little more.
